The Cord clamping trial
In a natural delivery about a cupful of blood flows from the placenta
(afterbirth) to the baby over the first few minutes after birth.
However in modern practice most midwives clamp and cut the cord as soon
as the baby is born. This prevents some of this blood transfusion.
No-one knows whether delaying clamping would make any difference to the
baby.
The extra transfusion may reduce anaemia and infections,
and the extra iron may even help brain development. However, it may
increase jaundice, and the delay may possibly interfere with
resuscitation of the baby. The cord clamping trial is designed to find
out which is best overall.
