Ethics statement
We, the members of the International Network for Knowledge about Wellbeing (ThinkWell), hereby commit ourselves to the highest feasible ethical and professional conduct in relation to this organisation and agree:
- to make decisions that are consistent with the safety, health and welfare of the public and employees of ThinkWell
- to try and help improve the understanding of scientific research and technology and their appropriate application and potential consequences
- to be honest in stating claims or estimates based on available data, recognising the inherent uncertainties and potential biases
- to avoid real or perceived conflicts of interest whenever possible, and to disclose them when they do exist
- to avoid personal financial incentives or conflicts of interest or entering into agreements that could threaten the scientific validity of our work or decisions
- to disclose promptly factors that might endanger the potential participants, public or the environment
- to respect and treat all persons fairly regardless of their race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, age, social class or national origin
- to ensure that all research undertaken under the ThinkWell umbrella is scientifically valid, protects participants welfare, safety and confidentiality and respects participants rights, autonomy and dignity, and is published promptly irrespective of the results
- to maintain and improve our own competence
- to seek, accept, and offer honest criticism, to acknowledge and correct errors, and to credit the contributions of others appropriately
- to help and support ThinkWell co-workers and members and encourage an open culture that seeks to find solutions for problems not apportion blame.
This ethics statement was drafted collaboratively through an open access wiki, set up in December 2006 for this purpose by people interested in establishing ThinkWell.
